The Maternity and Infant Care (MIC) database is included in your MIDIRS Midwifery Digest subscription.

Maternity and Infant Care is the world’s largest midwifery-specific database, and a key information resource used by maternity health care professionals and student midwives worldwide to support their research, practice and study requirements.

First developed in 1988, Maternity and Infant Care is a bibliographic database of over 300,000 records covering over 400 English-language journals and other sources.  Compiled by MIDIRS team of librarians, the database draws together information relating to the maternity services, midwifery profession and practice worldwide, pregnancy, labour and birth, postnatal health, care of the infant up to six weeks, and infant feeding.

Maternity and Infant Care indexes not only academic journals and book chapters, but a range of grey literature drawn from information sources not typically well represented in indexing databases, but vital for staying appraised of the latest developments in maternity and infant care, such as government publications, clinical guidelines, and parliamentary proceedings, as well as news items.  Details of correspondence and commentary written in response to articles are also included.

A record consists of all the details you need to determine if an article meets your needs. Typically, this includes the title, author/s, publication details, the abstract (if there isn’t one, we’ll write one), the type of content (ie original research, guidelines) and the format the information was produced in. If the full text is freely available online then we’ll include the URL; PDFs of all original MIDIRS Midwifery Digest and Essentially MIDIRS articles are instantly available. This includes Evidence Based Midwifery articles which are now incorporated in the Digest. Your university or workplace library should be able to help you to source the full text of any other articles.

Many of the records are assigned to one or more of over 550 continually updated pre-prepared literature Search Packs on key topics to provide fast retrieval, using a code, title or a browsable index of topics.

Maternity and Infant Care is a comprehensive collection of information covering the entire midwifery landscape. Having everything in one place – including items drawn from a wide range of grey literature not typically well represented in indexing databases - means that you don’t have to visit multiple databases or libraries, saving you time and effort.

Although we would love to offer full text access to every article we catalogue, the costs are prohibitive and we would prefer to keep subscription costs low and focus on delivering a comprehensive service to maternity health care professionals and students, with everything they need in one place.

This includes Evidence Based Midwifery articles which are now incorporated in the Digest. Your university or workplace library should be able to you to source the full text of any other articles.
